Zanzibar Travel Guide

Zanzibar is the Spice Island — a storied trading hub off the East African coast with a UNESCO-listed Stone Town, pristine white sand beaches, and a history intertwining Arab, African, Indian, and European cultures.

How Do You Get from the Ship to Stone Town?

Walk from the port into Stone Town in 5 minutes. The narrow alleys and markets are right at the waterfront.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Stone Town — UNESCO labyrinth of narrow alleys, carved doors, palaces, and markets. The House of Wonders and Old Fort are landmarks.

  2. Forodhani Gardens — Waterfront gardens that transform into an evening food market. Zanzibar pizza, grilled seafood, and sugar cane juice.

  3. Spice tour — Visit a spice farm to see, smell, and taste cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and cardamom growing. Half-day tours from $25.

  4. Prison Island — 20 min by boat. Giant Aldabra tortoises and a beach. $35-40 including boat and entry.

Where Should You Eat?

Zanzibar pizza: Not Italian pizza — a thin crepe filled with meat, vegetables, egg, and cheese, folded and fried. From Forodhani food stalls.

Pilau: Swahili spiced rice with meat or seafood. Aromatic with cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves.

Urojo (Zanzibar mix): A complex soup/snack with bhajias, potatoes, egg, and tangy sauce. Street food unique to Zanzibar.

Is Zanzibar Worth Exploring Independently?

Stone Town is walkable from the port. Spice tours and Prison Island easily booked from local operators at the port. Safe and welcoming.
