Dakar Travel Guide

Dakar is West Africa's most vibrant capital — a city of colourful markets, powerful music, Goree Island's slave history, and a teranga (hospitality) culture that makes visitors feel genuinely welcome.

How Do You Get Around?

Taxi from port to centre (15 min). Goree Island ferry from the harbour (20 min). Use authorised taxis and agree on price first.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Goree Island — UNESCO site 20 min by ferry. Maison des Esclaves, colourful colonial buildings, and artists' studios. Deeply moving history.

  2. African Renaissance Monument — 49m bronze statue on a hilltop. The tallest statue in Africa. Panoramic views.

  3. Marche Sandaga — Dakar's largest market. Fabrics, jewellery, masks, and the pulse of Senegalese life.

  4. IFAN Museum — West African art and cultural artefacts in a beautiful Art Deco building.

Where Should You Eat?

Thieboudienne: Senegal's national dish — fish and rice in a rich tomato sauce with vegetables. The foundation of Senegalese cuisine.

Yassa poulet: Chicken marinated in lemon and onion sauce. Tangy, sweet, and aromatic.

Cafe Touba: Senegalese spiced coffee with Selim pepper and cloves. Unique and memorable.

Is Dakar Worth Exploring Independently?

Goree Island ferry is straightforward. The city requires taxis. Limited English — French and Wolof dominate. Lucy's translation is valuable.
