Mombasa Travel Guide

Mombasa is Kenya's ancient Swahili port — a city of coral stone architecture, spice-scented old town, stunning Indian Ocean beaches, and the gateway to safari country. Fort Jesus and the Old Town have 500 years of layered African, Arab, and Portuguese history.

How Do You Get to Fort Jesus?

Taxi from the port to Old Town and Fort Jesus (15 min). Tuk-tuks for short trips within the island.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Fort Jesus — 16th-century Portuguese fortress. UNESCO site with museum of Swahili coast history. 1,200 KES.

  2. Old Town — Narrow lanes with carved Swahili doors, spice shops, and centuries of layered history.

  3. Diani Beach — 30km south. Pristine white sand, warm turquoise water, and palm-shaded beach bars.

  4. Haller Park — Wildlife sanctuary with giraffes, hippos, and the famous Owen and Mzee friendship (tortoise and hippo). 20 min from port.

Where Should You Eat?

Swahili food: Biryani, pilau (spiced rice), and fish in coconut sauce. The Swahili coast cuisine blends African, Arab, and Indian flavours.

Nyama choma: Kenyan grilled meat — usually goat. Served with ugali (maize meal) and kachumbari (tomato-onion salad).

Madafu: Fresh young coconut water, drunk through a straw from the nut. Refreshing and everywhere.

Is Mombasa Worth Exploring Independently?

Old Town and Fort Jesus are a taxi ride from port. Diani Beach is further but worthwhile. Tuk-tuks are cheap for local transport.
