Tangier Travel Guide

Tangier sits at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Mediterranean — a city of literary legends, a vibrant kasbah, and views across to Spain just 14km away. Once a haven for Beat writers and artists, it retains a bohemian energy.

How Do You Get to the Medina?

From Tanger Ville port, walk 10 minutes uphill to the medina entrance. The Kasbah is at the top of the medina.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Kasbah — The fortified hilltop with the Kasbah Museum, panoramic views to Spain, and the Dar el Makhzen palace.

  2. Medina — Narrow lanes, spice shops, carpet sellers, and traditional Moroccan architecture. Smaller and friendlier than Marrakech's.

  3. Grand Socco & Petit Socco — The two main squares. Grand Socco (outside the medina) and Petit Socco (inside) are the hubs of Tangier life.

  4. Caves of Hercules — Natural caves 14km west with an ocean opening shaped like the map of Africa. Taxi 150-200 MAD return.

Where Should You Eat?

Tagine: Clay pot stew. Try lamb with prunes and almonds — a Moroccan classic.

Msemen: Square Moroccan flatbread — flaky, buttery, served for breakfast with honey.

Mint tea: Poured from a height at every cafe. Sweet, minty, and part of every social interaction.

Is Tangier Worth Exploring Independently?

The medina and Kasbah are walkable from the city port. The Caves of Hercules need a taxi. Tangier is a great introduction to Morocco — less chaotic than Marrakech.

Local Tips

  • The Kasbah has the best views over the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain.
  • Tangier's medina is smaller and less overwhelming than Marrakech's — perfect for first-time Morocco visitors.
  • The Caves of Hercules (14km from city) have an ocean-facing opening shaped like Africa.
  • Unlicensed 'guides' will approach you in the medina. A firm 'la, shukran' (no thank you) is all that's needed.
