Maputo Travel Guide

Maputo is Mozambique's capital — a city of crumbling Art Deco grandeur, Portuguese-African culture, extraordinary seafood, and a vibrant energy emerging from decades of civil war. It's raw, real, and utterly captivating.

How Do You Get to the City?

Taxi from the port to the Baixa (downtown) in 10-15 min. Agree on price beforehand.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Fish Market (Mercado do Peixe) — Choose your prawns, lobster, or fish. They grill it right there. Fresh, cheap, and extraordinary.

  2. Maputo Railway Station — One of the most beautiful railway stations in Africa. Beaux-Arts architecture with a copper dome.

  3. Iron House (Casa de Ferro) — Prefabricated iron house designed by Gustave Eiffel. A quirky Maputo landmark.

  4. Central Market — Bustling market with produce, crafts, cashew nuts, and piri-piri sauce.

Where Should You Eat?

Prawns piri-piri: Mozambican prawns grilled with piri-piri chilli sauce. Legendary. The Fish Market is the place.

Matapa: Cassava leaves cooked with peanuts and coconut milk. A traditional Mozambican dish.

Cashews: Mozambique is one of the world's largest cashew producers. Fresh roasted cashews are cheap and incredible.

Is Maputo Worth Exploring Independently?

Taxis are the practical option. The Fish Market and railway station are the highlights. Limited English makes Lucy valuable for menus and signs.
