Taormina (Sicily) Travel Guide

Taormina is Sicily's most glamorous hillside town — perched on a cliff 200m above the Ionian Sea with a 2,300-year-old Greek theatre framing Mount Etna. The views, the elegance, and the granita make this one of the most memorable ports in the Mediterranean.

How Do You Get from the Ship to Taormina?

Ships tender to Giardini Naxos beach below the town. Walk 10 minutes to the Mazzaro cable car station, then ride the funivia up to Taormina (3 euro, 3 min). The cable car deposits you right at the edge of the old town. Taxis up the winding road cost 15 euro.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Greek Theatre (Teatro Antico) — A 3rd-century BC Greek theatre with a jaw-dropping view of Mount Etna framed by ancient columns. Entry 10 euro. Still used for performances in summer.

  2. Corso Umberto — Taormina's elegant main street. Designer boutiques, cafes, and baroque architecture. Walk its full length from Porta Messina to Porta Catania.

  3. Isola Bella — A tiny island nature reserve in a crystal-clear bay below Taormina. Take the cable car down to Mazzaro, then walk. Excellent snorkelling.

  4. Villa Comunale — Public gardens with panoramic coastal views and quirky Victorian follies. Peaceful and uncrowded.

Where Should You Eat in Taormina?

Granita: Sicily's finest frozen dessert. Almond (mandorla), lemon (limone), and pistachio flavours served with a warm brioche bun. Bam Bar is the legendary spot — expect a queue.

Pasta alla norma: Pasta with aubergine, tomato, basil, and salted ricotta. Sicily's defining pasta dish, and Taormina does it beautifully.

Cannoli: Ricotta-filled crispy tubes. Look for places that fill them fresh to order — the shell must be crispy.

Is Taormina Worth Exploring Independently?

The cable car makes Taormina simple to reach independently. The town is compact and entirely walkable. Ship excursions charge 100+ euro for essentially a cable car ride and free time — exactly what you can do yourself for 3 euro. Spend the savings on the best granita of your life.
