Haifa Travel Guide

Haifa is Israel's most diverse and tolerant city — a beautiful port town cascading down Mount Carmel to the Mediterranean. The stunning Bahai Gardens, the vibrant German Colony, and easy access to historic Acre and biblical Nazareth make this a fascinating port of call.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the City?

The cruise terminal is about 2km from the German Colony and the base of the Bahai Gardens. Walk along the waterfront (25 min) or take a short taxi (30 ILS / 8 euro). The Carmelit — Israel's only subway — runs up Mount Carmel from downtown.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Bahai Gardens — Nineteen immaculate terraces cascading down Mount Carmel to the golden-domed Shrine of the Bab. One of the world's most beautiful gardens. Free entry; tours available.

  2. German Colony — A charming street of Templar-era stone buildings, now home to restaurants, cafes, and boutiques. The main avenue points directly up at the Bahai Gardens.

  3. Acre (Akko) — A crusader-era walled city 25 min by train. Underground knights' halls, Ottoman-era souks, and the best hummus in Israel. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  4. Stella Maris & Cable Car — The Carmelite monastery at the top of Mount Carmel with beautiful mosaics. The cable car (30 ILS return) descends to the Bat Galim beach neighbourhood.

Where Should You Eat in Haifa?

Hummus: Israeli hummus is a meal, not a dip. Served warm with olive oil, chickpeas, and fresh pita. Hummus Eliyahu in the Wadi Nisnas neighbourhood is legendary.

Falafel & sabich: Falafel in pita with salad, pickles, and tahini. Sabich adds fried aubergine and hard-boiled egg. Both cost 20-30 ILS and are extraordinary.

Shakshuka: Eggs poached in spicy tomato sauce, served in the pan with bread for dipping. The ultimate Israeli breakfast.

Is Haifa Worth Exploring Independently?

Haifa is manageable independently — the Bahai Gardens and German Colony are the main attractions and easily reached from the port. Acre is a straightforward train trip. Ship excursions to Jerusalem (2.5 hours each way) are long but sometimes worth it if you've never been. For Haifa and Acre, go independent.
