Sardinia (Cagliari) Travel Guide

Cagliari is Sardinia's laid-back capital — a city of ancient ramparts, flamingo-filled lagoons, stunning beaches, and a food culture that's distinctly different from mainland Italy. It feels like a well-kept secret that cruise ships are only beginning to discover.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the City?

Walk 10 minutes along the waterfront to Via Roma — Cagliari's main boulevard with arcaded shops and cafes. The Castello (fortified old town) is uphill from there. Take the free public elevator from Piazza Yenne to save the climb.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Castello — The medieval walled quarter on the hilltop. Narrow lanes, the Cathedral, two Pisan towers, and panoramic terraces. The Bastione di Saint Remy terrace has spectacular views.

  2. National Archaeological Museum — Sardinia's nuragic bronze figurines and artefacts from the mysterious Bronze Age civilisation unique to this island.

  3. Poetto Beach — An 8km stretch of white sand and turquoise water. Bus from the centre takes 20 minutes. One of the best urban beaches in the Mediterranean.

  4. San Benedetto Market — One of the largest covered markets in Europe. The ground floor fish market is spectacular. Upper floors have meat, cheese, and produce.

Where Should You Eat in Cagliari?

Culurgiones: Sardinian ravioli stuffed with potato, pecorino, and mint, pinched into a decorative wheat-ear shape. A dish unlike anything on the mainland.

Fregola: Sardinian couscous-like pasta, often served with clams (fregola con arselle). A perfect coastal lunch dish.

Seadas: Fried pastry filled with pecorino cheese and drizzled with honey. Sweet, salty, and uniquely Sardinian.

Is Cagliari Worth Exploring Independently?

Cagliari is walkable, uncrowded, and genuinely charming. The combination of the old town, the market, and the beach makes for a varied and satisfying port day. Ship excursions typically go to nuragic sites outside the city — interesting but doable independently by bus.

Local Tips

  • Poetto Beach is Cagliari's 8km-long city beach — take bus PF or PQ (20 min, 1.30 euro). White sand and clear water.
  • The Molentargius wetland between the city and beach is home to wild flamingos. You can often see them from the bus.
  • Sardinian food is quite different from mainland Italian. Try culurgiones (stuffed pasta), porceddu (suckling pig), and pane carasau (paper-thin flatbread).
  • The Castello quarter at the top of the hill has the best views and the most atmospheric restaurants.
