Petra (Aqaba) Travel Guide

Aqaba is the gateway to Petra — one of the New Seven Wonders. The rose-red city carved into sandstone by the Nabataeans 2,000 years ago is genuinely awe-inspiring.

How Do You Get to Petra?

Private car or excursion (2 hrs each way). Full-day commitment. Wadi Rum is closer (1 hr).

What Can You See?

  1. Petra Treasury — Walk the Siq canyon to the rose-red facade. One of the world's most dramatic reveals.

  2. The Monastery — 800 steps, fewer crowds, equally impressive.

  3. Wadi Rum — Lawrence of Arabia's desert. Jeep tours through canyons.

  4. Aqaba — Red Sea snorkelling, castle, waterfront.

Where Should You Eat?

Mansaf: Jordan's national dish — lamb in yogurt sauce on rice.

Falafel & hummus: Excellent throughout Jordan.

Worth the Journey?

Petra is once-in-a-lifetime. Private car cheaper than excursions.
