Palma de Mallorca Travel Guide

Palma de Mallorca is a sophisticated Mediterranean capital that punches far above its weight — a stunning Gothic cathedral, winding old town lanes, an excellent food scene, and beautiful sandy beaches all within easy reach of the cruise port.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the City?

Take the free shuttle to the port entrance, then walk 15 minutes along the waterfront Paseo Maritimo toward the cathedral — you can see it from the port. Or take bus 1 from the port area (1.50 euro). A taxi costs about 10 euro.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Palma Cathedral (La Seu) — A Gothic masterpiece overlooking the sea. The interior was partly redesigned by Gaudi. The morning rose window light show is extraordinary. Entry 8 euro.

  2. Old Town — Narrow streets, grand patios (peer through the doorways), and hidden squares. The Banys Arabs (Arab Baths) are a tiny Moorish remnant worth finding.

  3. Bellver Castle — A unique circular Gothic castle on a hill 3km west. Panoramic views of the city, harbour, and bay. Bus 46 or taxi.

  4. Santa Catalina — The trendy market neighbourhood. Mercat de Santa Catalina has excellent food stalls; the surrounding streets have Palma's best tapas bars.

Where Should You Eat in Palma?

Tapas: Santa Catalina neighbourhood is the place. Pa amb oli (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil, topped with jamon or cheese) is Mallorca's signature snack.

Ensaimada: The spiral pastry that defines Mallorca. Light, flaky, dusted with icing sugar. The best bakeries fill them with cream, chocolate, or pumpkin jam.

Seafood: Tumbet (layered vegetables with fish) and arros brut (Mallorcan dirty rice with meat and vegetables) are local specialities you won't find on the mainland.

Is Palma Worth Exploring Independently?

Palma is a dream for independent exploration. The old town is compact and walkable, the cathedral is unmissable, and the food scene is excellent. Ship excursions typically bus you around the island — if you'd rather spend the day in the city, independent is the way to go.
