Osaka/Kobe Travel Guide
Kobe is the gateway to Kansai — Osaka (street food capital), Kyoto (ancient imperial city), and Kobe itself (famous beef, harbour, sake). The food here may be Japan's best.
How Do You Get to Osaka?
JR train from Kobe to Osaka (30 min, 410 yen). Kyoto: Shinkansen from Shin-Kobe (30 min).
What Can You See?
Dotonbori — Neon-lit canal of food stalls. Glico Running Man sign. Street food epicentre.
Osaka Castle — Reconstructed castle with museum and panoramic views. 600 yen.
Kobe Chinatown — Steamed buns, dumplings. Walkable from port.
Nada sake district — Breweries with free tastings. Walkable from Kobe.
Where Should You Eat?
Kobe beef: Extraordinary marbled steak. Lunch sets from 5,000 yen.
Takoyaki: Osaka's octopus balls. 500-800 yen for 8.
Okonomiyaki: Savoury cabbage pancakes.
Worth Exploring Independently?
Trains are excellent. Osaka is 30 min and the food justifies the trip. Ship excursions charge premiums for 410-yen trains.
