La Spezia (Cinque Terre) Travel Guide

La Spezia is the gateway to the Cinque Terre — five impossibly picturesque fishing villages clinging to the Ligurian coast. Connected by trains and coastal paths, these car-free hamlets with their colourful houses, vineyards, and turquoise coves are among Italy's most magical places.

How Do You Get from the Ship to Cinque Terre?

Take the free shuttle or walk 15 minutes from the cruise terminal to La Spezia Centrale station. Buy a Cinque Terre Train Card (18.50 euro) and hop on a train — they run every 15-20 minutes. Riomaggiore is the first village (8 min), Monterosso the last (20 min).

Which Villages Should You Visit?

  1. Vernazza — Many people's favourite. A tiny harbour, a medieval watchtower, and colourful houses tumbling down to the sea. The best swimming spot is the harbour beach.

  2. Manarola — The most photographed village, especially at sunset. Terraced vineyards cascade down to a tiny cove. The Nessun Dorma terrace has the iconic view.

  3. Riomaggiore — The closest to La Spezia and a great first stop. Steep, colourful, and dramatic. Good restaurants in the main street.

  4. Monterosso al Mare — The largest village with the best beach. A wide sandy stretch with sunbed rentals. The old town section is charming.

Where Should You Eat in Cinque Terre?

Pesto: Liguria invented pesto — this is where it's best. Trofie al pesto (twisted pasta with fresh basil pesto, green beans, and potatoes) is the signature dish. Every village trattoria makes it.

Focaccia: Ligurian focaccia is lighter and oilier than elsewhere in Italy. Buy it fresh from any bakery. Focaccia di Recco (filled with stracchino cheese) is extraordinary.

Seafood: Anchovies (acciughe) are the local speciality — fried, marinated, or in pasta. Fresh and completely different from the tinned version.

Is Cinque Terre Worth Exploring Independently?

This is one of the easiest and most rewarding independent excursions from any Mediterranean cruise port. The train system is reliable, the Cinque Terre Card makes it simple, and the villages are car-free so you just walk and explore. Ship excursions charge 100+ euro for what costs 18.50 euro to do yourself.

Local Tips

  • Buy the Cinque Terre Train Card (18.50 euro) — it covers unlimited train travel between villages plus trail access. Sold at La Spezia station.
  • Don't try to see all five villages. Pick 2-3 and enjoy them slowly. Vernazza and Manarola are the most photogenic.
  • The coastal hiking trail between villages varies from easy to challenging. Check which sections are open (closures due to landslides are common).
  • Monterosso has the only real sandy beach. Vernazza and Riomaggiore have tiny pebble coves.
  • Pesto was invented in Liguria. Order trofie al pesto (twisted pasta with basil pesto) — it's the regional masterpiece.
