Florence (Livorno) Travel Guide

Livorno is the cruise gateway to Florence and Pisa — two of Italy's most extraordinary cities. The 90-minute train ride to Florence is worth every minute for the Uffizi, the Duomo, and what many consider the greatest concentration of Renaissance art on earth.

How Do You Get from Livorno to Florence?

Take the free port shuttle to Piazza Grande in Livorno, then walk 10 minutes to Livorno Centrale station. Regional trains to Florence Santa Maria Novella run roughly hourly and take 90 minutes (10-15 euro). Buy tickets at the station or on the Trenitalia app. Remember to validate paper tickets before boarding.

What Can You See in 6 Hours in Florence?

  1. The Duomo — Florence's cathedral with Brunelleschi's dome. Climbing the dome (463 steps, timed tickets required) gives you one of the world's great views.

  2. Uffizi Gallery — Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Da Vinci, Raphael, Caravaggio. Book timed tickets well in advance. Allow 2-3 hours minimum.

  3. Ponte Vecchio — The iconic medieval bridge lined with jewellery shops. Best photographed from the Ponte Santa Trinita downstream.

  4. San Lorenzo Market — Leather goods, food stalls, and the nearby Mercato Centrale food hall. Perfect for lunch and souvenir shopping.

Where Should You Eat in Florence?

Bistecca alla fiorentina: A massive T-bone steak grilled rare over chestnut wood. Shared between two. Trattoria Mario near San Lorenzo is legendary and affordable (by Florence standards).

Lampredotto: Florence's iconic street food — tripe sandwich from a street cart. Sounds terrible, tastes incredible. The cart at Piazza del Mercato Nuovo is the most famous.

Gelato: Florence is the birthplace of gelato. Look for shops that make it fresh (metal lids on the containers, not piled in colourful mounds). Vivoli and La Carraia are excellent.

Is the Florence Day Trip Worth It?

If you've never been to Florence, absolutely. The Duomo, the Uffizi, and the atmosphere of the Renaissance capital are worth the 90-minute train ride. Ship excursions charge 120-150 euro for a guided bus tour; the train costs 10-15 euro each way. Plan carefully, leave early, and you'll have a magnificent day.

Local Tips

  • Book Uffizi Gallery tickets online weeks in advance — walk-up queues can be 3+ hours.
  • Florence is a realistic day trip but demanding. Leave on the earliest train, be back at Livorno by 5pm.
  • Pisa is much closer (20 min train) and the Leaning Tower is genuinely impressive. Consider combining it with a half-day in Livorno.
  • Livorno itself has an excellent seafood scene. If you've already seen Florence, spend the day in Livorno's canal district instead.
  • The Florentine steak (bistecca alla fiorentina) is priced by weight — typically 45-60 euro for a 1kg T-bone. It's meant for sharing.
