Catania Travel Guide

Catania is Sicily's edgy, volcanic second city — built from black lava stone beneath the shadow of Mount Etna. It's grittier than Taormina but has a spectacular baroque centre, the island's best street food market, and an energy that's unmistakably Sicilian.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the City?

Walk 10 minutes along Via Dusmet from the cruise terminal to Piazza Duomo — the heart of Catania. The baroque cathedral with its elephant fountain is your landmark.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. La Pescheria (Fish Market) — A raw, theatrical open-air market in the streets below Piazza Duomo. Swordfish being butchered, octopus piled on ice, vendors shouting. The real Catania experience.

  2. Piazza Duomo & Cathedral — The baroque cathedral with its elephant fountain (Catania's symbol). Climb the dome for rooftop views of the city and Etna.

  3. Via Etnea — Catania's main thoroughfare running straight toward Etna. Baroque churches, shops, and cafes with the volcano looming at the end of every view.

  4. Monastero dei Benedettini — One of the largest Benedictine monasteries in Europe. Now part of the university. Guided tours reveal hidden cloisters and Roman ruins beneath.

Where Should You Eat in Catania?

Arancine: Catania's rice balls are called arancine (not arancini — it's a fierce debate). Stuffed with ragu, butter, or pistachio. 1-2 euro from any bar or bakery.

Pasta alla norma: Invented in Catania and named after Bellini's opera. Pasta with fried aubergine, tomato, basil, and salted ricotta. Every restaurant serves it.

Granita: Pistachio, almond, or mulberry granita with brioche for breakfast. Catania takes this seriously.

Is Catania Worth Exploring Independently?

Catania's city centre is walkable from the port and full of character. The fish market and street food make it a food lover's paradise. Ship excursions to Etna are popular but expensive — AST buses run to the Etna cable car station if you're adventurous enough to do it independently.

Local Tips

  • La Pescheria (the fish market) below Piazza Duomo is one of the most spectacular food markets in Europe. Go before noon.
  • Mount Etna day trips take 5-6 hours minimum. Only attempt if your ship is in port for 8+ hours.
  • Catania's Via Etnea is the main shopping street — walk it for baroque churches, people-watching, and the best view of Etna from the city.
  • Try horse meat if you're adventurous — it's a Catanian speciality. Look for 'carne equina' on menus or at the market.
