What Is Shoulder Season?
Shoulder season is the period between peak and off-season. It varies by destination: April-May and September-October for the Mediterranean, May and September for Alaska, and May-June and November for the Caribbean. These windows offer a remarkable sweet spot.
Shoulder Season by Destination
Mediterranean (April-May, Sep-Oct): Prices 20-40% lower than July-August. Ports are less crowded. Weather is warm and comfortable (20-28C). The only trade-off: water may be cooler for swimming in spring.
Alaska (May and September): May offers spring wildlife and lower prices. September has fall colors and potential northern lights. Both are significantly cheaper than June-August.
Caribbean (May-June, November): Just outside hurricane season. Prices drop significantly. Weather is generally fine though occasional rain is possible.
Northern Europe (May, September): Avoids the summer crowds at popular ports like Copenhagen and Bergen. Long daylight hours in May.
