Norwegian Fjord Cruises: Best Time to Go

May-June: The Midnight Sun
Late May through June offers the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle — 24 hours of daylight. Waterfalls are at peak flow from snowmelt. Fjords are dramatically green. Long days mean you see everything. This is the most popular and expensive time.
July-August: Warmth and Wildlife
The warmest months (12-18C). Sea eagles, puffins, and whales are active. Hiking conditions are at their best. Norwegian summer is fleeting and precious — locals are outdoors constantly, and the atmosphere is joyful.
September-October: Autumn Colors
The fjords turn gold and crimson. Crowds thin significantly. Northern lights become possible from September onward. Prices drop. The air is crisp and clear. Many consider this the most atmospheric time to visit.
Winter: Northern Lights
November through February, Hurtigruten and a few other lines run northern lights cruises along the Norwegian coast. Days are short (or entirely dark in the far north), but the northern lights over the fjords are spectacular. Not for everyone, but unforgettable for those who embrace the darkness.
Our Recommendation
June for the best all-around experience. September for atmosphere and value. Winter for the northern lights. Lucy helps with Norwegian menus (try brown cheese, reindeer stew, and fresh salmon) and translates signs at remote fjord villages.
