Punta Arenas Travel Guide

Punta Arenas is Chile's gateway to the Strait of Magellan, penguin colonies, and the wild Patagonian steppe. This wind-swept frontier city is the jumping-off point for some of the most dramatic landscapes in South America.

How Do You Get to the Penguins?

Seno Otway: taxi or tour (65km, 1 hr). Isla Magdalena: ferry from Punta Arenas (2 hrs each way, only Oct-March). Ship excursions are practical for Magdalena.

What Can You Do?

  1. Penguin colonies — Magellanic penguins at Seno Otway (65km by road) or Isla Magdalena (ferry). 120,000+ penguins on Magdalena.

  2. Plaza de Armas — The main square with the Magellan monument. Rub the toe of the Patagonian native statue for luck.

  3. Nao Victoria Museum — Replica of Magellan's ship and other historic vessels.

  4. Cerro de la Cruz — Viewpoint over the city and the Strait of Magellan.

Where Should You Eat?

Centolla (king crab): Giant king crab from the Strait. Punta Arenas's signature.

Cordero magallanico: Patagonian lamb. Slow-roasted or grilled.

Worth Exploring Independently?

Town is walkable. Seno Otway is feasible by taxi. Isla Magdalena usually requires a ship excursion or pre-booked ferry.
