Puerto Montt Travel Guide

Puerto Montt is the gateway to Chile's Lake District — a region of snow-capped volcanoes, emerald lakes, and German-influenced towns. Nearby Puerto Varas and the Petrohue Falls are spectacularly scenic.

How Do You Get Around?

Walk to Angelmo market (10 min). Bus to Puerto Varas (20 min, 1,000 CLP). Petrohue requires taxi or tour (75 min).

What Can You See?

  1. Angelmo Market — Seafood restaurants and craft market right near the port. Giant curanto (seafood stew) and fresh ceviche.

  2. Puerto Varas — German-influenced lakeside town. Osorno volcano backdrop. Excellent restaurants and rose garden.

  3. Petrohue Falls — Striking basalt lava waterfalls. Turquoise water through black rock. 75 min from port.

  4. Frutillar — Another German-influenced town on the lake. The Teatro del Lago concert hall is architecturally stunning.

Where Should You Eat?

Curanto: Traditional Chilote stew of shellfish, meat, and potato. Cooked in a hole in the ground traditionally.

Fresh seafood: Angelmo market serves enormous plates of local shellfish, salmon, and fish.

Worth Exploring Independently?

Angelmo is walkable. Puerto Varas is a cheap bus ride. Petrohue requires transport — taxi or tour.
