Dal Bhat Power

Momo Culture

Newari Cuisine
Kathmandu Valley's ancient cuisine: beaten rice with marinated meats, chatamari, yomari. Found nowhere else.
Trekking Food
Teahouse menus: dal bhat, fried rice, noodle soups, pancakes. Prices increase with altitude. Dal bhat is always fresh and safest.

Dal bhat is naturally gluten-free. Avoid momos, thukpa, wheat breads. Beaten rice, sel roti, chatamari are rice-based.
Common Allergies
Dairy (ghee, yoghurt) in many dishes. Wheat in momos and noodles. Say 'malai ___ allergy cha'.
Ordering Tips
- •Dal bhat is unlimited. Accept seconds at least once.
- •Best momos are from dedicated momo shops, not tourist restaurants.
- •On treks, dal bhat is most reliable: freshly cooked, most filling.
- •Tipping 10% in Kathmandu. Tip guides and porters generously.
