Dal Bhat Power

Momo Culture

Nepal's obsession. Steamed, fried, jhol (in soup). Every neighbourhood has a momo shop. Festivals and competitions are serious.

Newari Cuisine

Kathmandu Valley's ancient cuisine: beaten rice with marinated meats, chatamari, yomari. Found nowhere else.

Trekking Food

Teahouse menus: dal bhat, fried rice, noodle soups, pancakes. Prices increase with altitude. Dal bhat is always fresh and safest.

Dietary Restriction Guide

Vegetarian

Very vegetarian-friendly. Dal bhat always has a vegetarian version. Vegetable momos, aloo dishes, paneer widely available. Say 'masu bina'.

Vegan

Dal bhat without ghee, vegetable curries in oil, vegetable momos available. Kathmandu has dedicated vegan restaurants.

Gluten-Free

Dal bhat is naturally gluten-free. Avoid momos, thukpa, wheat breads. Beaten rice, sel roti, chatamari are rice-based.

Common Allergies

Dairy (ghee, yoghurt) in many dishes. Wheat in momos and noodles. Say 'malai ___ allergy cha'.

Ordering Tips

  • Dal bhat is unlimited. Accept seconds at least once.
  • Best momos are from dedicated momo shops, not tourist restaurants.
  • On treks, dal bhat is most reliable: freshly cooked, most filling.
  • Tipping 10% in Kathmandu. Tip guides and porters generously.
