Adriatic Dining: Where Mediterranean Meets Balkan

Croatia and Montenegro share a stunning Adriatic coastline and a cuisine that blends Italian, Turkish, and Central European influences. Coastal restaurants focus on seafood and olive oil. Inland, the cuisine shifts to grilled meats, stews, and hearty dishes.

Cruise travelers typically visit Dubrovnik, Split, or Kotor — all coastal ports where seafood dominates. The quality is exceptional, and prices are lower than Italy or France.

Essential Menu Items

  • Crni rizot — Black risotto made with squid ink. A signature Dalmatian dish.

  • Peka — Meat or seafood slow-cooked under a domed metal lid with potatoes and vegetables. Must be ordered in advance.

  • Cevapi — Small grilled minced meat sausages, served in bread with onions and ajvar (roasted pepper relish).

  • Buzara — Shellfish (usually mussels or shrimp) cooked in wine, garlic, and breadcrumbs.

  • Pasticada — Dalmatian beef stew braised in red wine and prune sauce, served with gnocchi.

  • Fritule — Small fried doughnuts dusted with sugar. A beloved street dessert.

Ordering Tips for the Adriatic

Fish is often priced by the kilogram, not per portion. Ask your server to recommend a portion size for your group. Fresh fish is typically displayed on ice — you can choose your fish and have it grilled.

Service is relaxed along the coast. Meals are long affairs. Bread, olive oil, and sometimes a small appetizer arrive automatically and may appear as a small charge on the bill.

Lucy on the Adriatic Coast

Croatian and Montenegrin menus use Latin script but are full of unfamiliar terms. Lucy translates every dish, explains regional specialties like peka (which you need to know about in advance to order), and flags allergens in seafood-heavy cuisine.
