When to Go
The Alaska cruise season runs from May to September. May offers longer daylight and spring wildlife (bears with cubs). June and July have the best weather and longest days (18+ hours of daylight). August brings salmon runs and berry season. September has fall colors and northern lights potential but shorter days.
Itinerary Options
Inside Passage (roundtrip from Seattle/Vancouver): 7 days, visits Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway. The classic Alaska cruise. No passport needed for US citizens on roundtrip sailings.
Gulf of Alaska (one-way Seattle to Anchorage or reverse): 7 days, adds Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier. More scenic variety. Requires a flight home from the other end.
Small ship expeditions: Fewer passengers, access to narrow fjords and wildlife areas large ships cannot reach. More expensive but more intimate.
What to Pack
Waterproof jacket — rain is frequent, especially in Southeast Alaska.
Layers — temperatures range from 5-20C. Mornings are cold, afternoons can be mild.
Binoculars — for whales, bears, eagles, and glacier viewing from the ship.
Waterproof hiking boots — trails at ports can be muddy and wet.
Bear spray — if you plan to hike independently at ports like Juneau.
