Tallinn Travel Guide

Tallinn's medieval Old Town is one of the best-preserved in Europe — a fairy-tale collection of cobblestone streets, Gothic spires, and ancient city walls. It's compact, charming, and an absolute gem of a cruise port that many travellers don't expect to love as much as they do.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the Old Town?

Tallinn's cruise terminal is a pleasant 15-minute walk from the Old Town. Follow the road from the port toward the medieval towers — they're visible ahead of you. The route is flat and straightforward.

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) — The heart of the Old Town. A stunning medieval square surrounded by merchant houses, now filled with cafés and restaurants.

  2. Toompea Hill — The upper town with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Russian Orthodox, spectacular interior) and Toompea Castle (Estonian Parliament). Two viewpoint platforms offer the best panoramic views.

  3. St. Olav's Church Tower — Climb 258 steps for the highest viewpoint in the Old Town. Not for the faint-hearted, but the 360° view is extraordinary.

  4. Tallinn City Walls — Walk sections of the remarkably preserved medieval walls. The Hellemann Tower section is open for walking along the ramparts.

  5. Telliskivi Creative City — A trendy neighbourhood just outside the Old Town walls. Street art, design shops, craft beer bars, and some of Tallinn's best restaurants.

Where Should You Eat in Tallinn?

Traditional: Try Estonian black bread, blood sausage (verivorst — better than it sounds), and sauerkraut with pork. Olde Hansa in the Old Town serves medieval-recipe food by candlelight — touristy but genuinely enjoyable.

Modern: Telliskivi neighbourhood has Tallinn's best contemporary restaurants. Expect creative Nordic-Baltic cuisine at very reasonable prices.

Budget: Tallinn is one of the most affordable Northern European ports. A full lunch with drinks costs €12-18.

Is Tallinn Worth Exploring Independently?

Tallinn is possibly the easiest cruise port in Northern Europe to explore independently. The Old Town is tiny, flat (except Toompea Hill), and impossible to get lost in — the medieval walls form a clear boundary. Everything is within a 10-minute walk. Ship excursions are completely unnecessary. Walk, wander, eat, and enjoy.

Local Tips

  • Tallinn's Old Town is tiny — you can walk the entire thing in an hour. But go slowly; the details reward attention.
  • The upper town (Toompea) has the best views. Climb the steps from the lower town for panoramic viewpoints.
  • Estonia uses the Euro. Cards accepted everywhere.
  • Tallinn's medieval restaurants (like Olde Hansa) are touristy but genuinely fun — candlelit rooms, medieval music, and food cooked from historical recipes.
