Melbourne Travel Guide

Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital — a city of laneways, street art, world-class coffee, live music, and a food scene that draws from every cuisine on earth. It's regularly voted the world's most liveable city.

How Do You Get to the City?

Tram 109 from Station Pier to the CBD (25 min). Free within the CBD zone. Or taxi ($20-25 AUD).

What Can You See in 6 Hours?

  1. Laneways — Hosier Lane (street art gallery), Degraves Street (cafes), Centre Place, and Hardware Lane. Melbourne's soul is in these narrow alleys.

  2. Federation Square — Melbourne's cultural hub. ACMI (screen culture museum), Ian Potter Centre (Australian art), and the city's gathering place.

  3. Queen Victoria Market — Fresh produce, deli items, souvenirs, and food stalls. Open Tuesday-Sunday (check days).

  4. Royal Botanic Gardens — Beautiful gardens on the Yarra River. Free. Aboriginal heritage walk available.

Where Should You Eat?

Coffee: Melbourne has the best coffee culture in the world. Any laneway cafe will serve an excellent flat white.

Multicultural food: Lygon Street (Italian), Victoria Street Richmond (Vietnamese), Chinatown (Chinese/Malaysian). Melbourne's diversity is its superpower.

Meat pie: Pie and sauce (tomato) from any bakery. The Australian fast food.

Is Melbourne Worth Exploring Independently?

Tram 109 connects the port to the CBD. Free trams in the city centre. Melbourne is made for independent exploration — the laneways, coffee, and food reward wandering.

Local Tips

  • Melbourne's laneways are the attraction — Hosier Lane (street art), Degraves Street (cafes), and Hardware Lane (restaurants).
  • Melbourne takes coffee seriously. Never order a 'regular coffee' — say flat white, long black, or latte.
  • Trams are free in the CBD Free Tram Zone. Step on without a ticket within the marked zone.
  • Queen Victoria Market has food stalls, fresh produce, and Melbourne souvenirs.
