Juneau Travel Guide

Juneau is Alaska's capital — a tiny city wedged between towering mountains and the Gastineau Channel, accessible only by sea or air. The Mendenhall Glacier is just 12 miles away, whale watching is world-class, and the setting is jaw-droppingly beautiful.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the Town?

Juneau's cruise terminal is right in downtown — walk straight off the ship into the town centre. Shops, restaurants, and the visitor centre are all within a few minutes' walk.

What Can You Do in 6 Hours?

  1. Mendenhall Glacier — The highlight of any Juneau port call. Take the city bus ($2) 12 miles to the glacier. The Visitor Center has viewing platforms; the Nugget Falls trail (1 mile) gets you face-to-face with the glacier.

  2. Whale Watching — Juneau is one of the best whale watching spots on earth. 3-hour tours ($150-180) have near-100% success rates for humpback whales May-September.

  3. Downtown Juneau — Walk the historic downtown, visit the Alaska State Museum, and browse the shops along South Franklin Street.

  4. Tram to Mount Roberts — The Goldbelt Tram ($35) rises 1,800 feet for panoramic views of the channel and surrounding peaks. A nature centre and trails at the top.

Where Should You Eat in Juneau?

King crab: Tracy's King Crab Shack near the port is legendary. Bucket of crab legs, outdoor seating overlooking the harbour. Arrive early — the queue builds fast on cruise ship days.

Salmon: Fresh Alaska salmon (sockeye, king, or coho depending on season) is outstanding everywhere. Look for places that say "wild-caught" — farmed salmon has no place in Alaska.

Is Juneau Worth Exploring Independently?

Downtown Juneau is easily walkable, but the big attractions (glacier, whale watching) require transport. The glacier is doable independently by bus ($2 vs $60+ ship excursion). Whale watching tours can be booked in advance for less than ship prices. For the glacier and a nice lunch, independent is the way to go.
