Grand Cayman Travel Guide

Grand Cayman is home to Seven Mile Beach — one of the Caribbean's most stunning stretches of sand — plus world-class snorkelling, stingray encounters, and a surprisingly sophisticated food scene. Ships tender into George Town, the compact capital.

How Do You Get from the Ship to Shore?

Grand Cayman is a tender port — small boats shuttle you from the ship to George Town harbour in about 10 minutes. You step off right into the waterfront shopping district. The tender process can take 30-45 minutes on busy days, so get in the queue early.

What Can You Do in 6 Hours?

  1. Seven Mile Beach — One of the Caribbean's finest beaches. Crystal-clear water, powdery white sand, and excellent snorkelling right off the shore. Taxi from George Town is $5-8. The beach is public — no entry fee.

  2. Stingray City — A shallow sandbar where you wade among friendly southern stingrays. Boat trips from George Town take about 30 minutes each way. Book independently ($40-50) rather than through the ship ($80+).

  3. George Town — Walk the compact town centre. The Cayman Islands National Museum is small but interesting. The waterfront has good restaurants and duty-free shopping.

  4. Snorkelling at Smith Cove — A beautiful, calm cove south of George Town with excellent reef snorkelling. Free entry, small parking area. Taxi or 15-min walk from the tender dock.

Where Should You Eat in Grand Cayman?

Conch: Conch fritters and cracked conch are local staples. Try them at any waterfront restaurant in George Town.

Jerk: Caribbean jerk chicken and pork are excellent here. Look for roadside jerk shacks north of George Town for the most authentic (and cheapest) versions.

Fish tacos: The Caribbean-Mexican fusion on Grand Cayman produces outstanding fish tacos. Fresh mahi-mahi or snapper with lime slaw.

Is Grand Cayman Worth Exploring Independently?

Absolutely. George Town is compact and walkable. The main attractions (Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City, snorkelling) are all bookable independently for significantly less than ship excursions. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. The only thing to plan ahead is the Stingray City boat trip — these fill up.

Local Tips

  • Grand Cayman uses the Cayman Islands Dollar (CI$), but US dollars are accepted everywhere. You'll often get change in a mix of both currencies.
  • Stingray City sandbar trips are the #1 activity. Book independently for $40-50 vs $80+ through the ship.
  • Seven Mile Beach is public. You don't need a beach club — just grab a spot on the sand. Bring your own towel and snorkelling gear.
  • The Cayman Islands are expensive — similar to Bermuda pricing. A casual lunch runs $15-25 per person.
