Curacao Travel Guide

Curacao is the most colourful island in the Caribbean — its UNESCO-listed capital Willemstad has Dutch colonial buildings painted in every colour imaginable. Add pristine beaches, Blue Curacao liqueur, and a vibrant food scene.

How Do You Get from the Ship to Willemstad?

Walk. Cross the Queen Emma pontoon bridge to reach the Handelskade — the iconic colourful buildings. The entire UNESCO centre is walkable.

What Can You Do in 6 Hours?

  1. Handelskade & Punda — The postcard-perfect colourful buildings. Floating market, Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue (oldest in the Western Hemisphere).

  2. Mambo Beach — Modern beach complex 10 min from Willemstad. White sand, beach bars, and good snorkelling.

  3. Curacao Liqueur Distillery — Learn how Blue Curacao is made from laraha oranges. Free tastings of all colours.

  4. Shete Boka National Park — Dramatic caves and blowholes on the north coast. 45 min from Willemstad.

Where Should You Eat?

Old Market (Marshe Bieu): Best local lunch in Willemstad. Stews, rice and beans, and fresh fish. Cheap and authentic.

Keshi yena: Cheese stuffed with spiced meat — the signature Dutch-Caribbean dish.

Is Curacao Worth Exploring Independently?

Willemstad is walkable. For beaches, taxis are affordable. Ship excursions are overpriced for taxi rides. The colourful UNESCO centre makes this an easy independent port day.
