Cozumel Travel Guide
Cozumel is a laid-back Caribbean island off Mexico's Yucatán coast, famous for crystal-clear snorkelling waters, Mayan ruins, and excellent Mexican food. It's one of the busiest cruise ports in the world — but escape the terminal area and it feels like a different place entirely.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the Island?
If you dock at Punta Langosta, you walk straight into the centre of San Miguel — Cozumel's main town. If you dock at the International Pier (5km south), grab a taxi to San Miguel ($5-8) or head to a nearby beach club. Both piers have tourist shops and restaurants immediately at the exit.
What Can You Do in 6 Hours?
Snorkelling at Chankanaab — A national marine park with calm, clear water and abundant fish. Snorkel gear rental is included in the entry fee ($25). Perfect for beginners.
San Miguel town — Walk 3 blocks inland from the waterfront for authentic Mexican life — taco stands, local markets, and colourful streets far from the cruise crowds.
Beach clubs — Playa Mia, Mr Sanchos, and Paradise Beach offer day passes ($50-60) with food, drinks, pools, and beach access.
Mayan ruins at San Gervasio — A small but atmospheric Mayan site in the island's interior. Take a taxi ($25 round trip with wait time).
Where Should You Eat in Cozumel?
Tacos: Walk into San Miguel and find a taco stand. Al pastor (spit-roasted pork), carnitas (slow-cooked pork), and pescado (fish) tacos for $1-2 each. Better than any restaurant at the pier.
Ceviche: Fresh lime-cured fish or shrimp is outstanding in Cozumel. Order it at any waterfront restaurant.
Is Cozumel Worth Exploring Independently?
Absolutely. Cozumel is safe, friendly, and easy to navigate independently. The ship excursions are mostly overpriced beach club packages or snorkelling trips you can book yourself for less. Grab a taxi, explore San Miguel, eat real Mexican food, and spend the savings on an extra round of tacos. Lucy handles Spanish menus beautifully — though in Cozumel, many places have English menus too.

Local Tips
- •Negotiate taxi prices before getting in. Cozumel taxis don't use meters. Agree on the fare first.
- •The best snorkelling is at El Cielo (shallow starfish sandbar) or Chankanaab Park. Both require a short taxi or boat ride.
- •Avoid the shops right at the cruise terminal — they're tourist traps. Walk 3 blocks into San Miguel for real Mexican shops and food.
- •Mexican pesos get better prices than US dollars at local restaurants, though dollars are accepted everywhere.
