Costa Maya Travel Guide
Costa Maya is the gateway to spectacular Mayan ruins, the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and Bacalar Lagoon. The port has a pool and shops, but the real treasures lie outside.
How Do You Get Around?
The port has a pool and beach. Mahahual village (2km north, free shuttle) and the reef are better options. Chacchoben ruins are 1 hour by bus.
What Can You Do in 6 Hours?
Mahahual village — Laid-back beach village with malecon boardwalk, snorkelling, and fresh ceviche at palapa restaurants.
Chacchoben Mayan ruins — Jungle-surrounded Mayan city. Impressive pyramids. $60-80 guided tour.
Reef snorkelling — Mesoamerican Barrier Reef just offshore. Book from Mahahual ($25-35).
Port complex — Free pool, beach access, shops, and restaurants.
Where Should You Eat?
Ceviche: Fresh lime-cured fish or shrimp at Mahahual beach restaurants.
Fish tacos: 20-30 pesos each from Mahahual street vendors.
Is Costa Maya Worth Exploring Independently?
Mahahual is reachable by free shuttle. Book Chacchoben with a local operator for half the ship price. Best value is the beach and reef.
