Bonaire Travel Guide

Bonaire is the Caribbean's diving and snorkelling capital — pristine coral reefs starting right from shore, wild flamingos, and a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere.

How Do You Get to the Reefs?

Walk off the ship into Kralendijk. Snorkel sites are walkable or a short taxi ride. Rent gear from dive shops ($10-15/day). Buy a marine park tag ($25) at any dive shop.

What Can You Do in 6 Hours?

  1. Shore snorkelling — Bonaire's reefs start from the beach. Top sites: 1000 Steps, Te Amo Beach, and Klein Bonaire island.

  2. Kralendijk — Colourful tiny capital with Dutch colonial buildings and waterfront restaurants.

  3. Lac Bay — Shallow windswept bay with world-class windsurfing and mangrove kayaking.

  4. Southern salt pans — Vast salt flats where flamingos gather. Pink-tinged landscape with bright pink birds.

Where Should You Eat?

Pastechi: Fried pastry turnovers. The universal ABC island snack.

Kabritu stew: Slow-cooked goat in spiced tomato sauce. Traditional Bonaire comfort food.

Is Bonaire Worth Exploring Independently?

Bonaire is tiny and safe. Rent snorkel gear, grab a taxi to a beach, and spend the day in the water. Much cheaper than ship excursions.
