Bergen Travel Guide
Bergen is Norway's second city and the gateway to the fjords — a picturesque harbour town of colourful wooden houses, fish markets, and mountains you can ride a funicular to the top of. Possibly the most beautiful cruise port in Northern Europe.

How Do You Get from the Ship to the City?
Bergen's cruise terminals are right on the harbour, within easy walking distance of Bryggen and the city centre. Step off the ship and you're in the city — no transport needed.
What Can You See in 6 Hours?
Bryggen — The iconic row of colourful wooden warehouses on the harbour. A UNESCO World Heritage Site dating to the Hanseatic era. Walk behind the facades to explore the narrow alleyways.
Fløibanen Funicular — A 6-minute ride to the top of Mount Fløyen (320m). The panoramic view of the city, fjord, and surrounding mountains is Bergen's #1 experience.
Fish Market — Fresh seafood, smoked salmon, king crab, and fish soup. The indoor hall (Mathallen) has year-round stalls from Bergen's best producers.
KODE Art Museums — Four museums of art, design, and music along a lakeside park. Edvard Munch and Nikolai Astrup collections are highlights.
Where Should You Eat in Bergen?
Seafood: Bergen does seafood better than almost anywhere in Europe. Try fiskesuppe (creamy fish soup), fresh king crab legs, smoked salmon, and any catch of the day.
Fish Market: The best place for a casual seafood lunch. Order fish soup, a salmon sandwich, or shrimp by weight. Eat at the outdoor counters overlooking the harbour.
Is Bergen Worth Exploring Independently?
Bergen is the perfect independent cruise port. The city is small, beautiful, and completely walkable. Bryggen, the funicular, and the fish market are all within a 10-minute radius of the ship. Ship excursions are unnecessary unless you want to do a fjord cruise — and even those can be booked independently at the harbour.

Local Tips
- •Bergen is famously rainy — it rains about 240 days a year. Bring a waterproof jacket regardless of the forecast.
- •The Fløibanen funicular (€10 return) takes you to the top of Mount Fløyen in 6 minutes. The views are extraordinary even in rain.
- •Norway is extremely expensive. A beer costs €10-12, a lunch €25-35. This is normal, not a tourist surcharge.
- •Bergen's famous fish market has two parts: the outdoor stalls (seasonal) and the indoor hall (year-round). The indoor hall is better value.
