Akureyri Travel Guide

Akureyri is Iceland's second city (19,000 people) at the head of a dramatic fjord. Gateway to Godafoss waterfall, whale watching, and the surreal Myvatn geothermal area.

How Do You Get to the Waterfall?

Walk to town in 5-10 min. Godafoss: bus or taxi (150-200 euro return per car). Whale watching boats from the harbour.

What Can You Do?

  1. Godafoss — Wide horseshoe waterfall in a dramatic canyon. 50km east, allow 3-4 hours round trip.

  2. Whale watching — 3-hour tours. High humpback success rates. 80-100 euro.

  3. Akureyri town — Church, botanical garden, Christmas House. Small but charming.

  4. Myvatn — Surreal geothermal area 100km east. Only for long port days.

Where Should You Eat?

Icelandic lamb: Free-range, slow-roasted or in soup.

Hot dogs: Lamb hot dogs with crispy onions and remoulade.

Is Akureyri Worth Exploring Independently?

Town is walkable. Godafoss by shared taxi is cheaper than excursions. Whale watching bookable at harbour.
