The Walk from the Terminal

Venice's cruise terminal is on the western edge of the city. St. Mark's Square is on the eastern side. The walk takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and how often you stop. Follow yellow signs for "San Marco" posted throughout the city.

Alternatively, the Vaporetto (water bus) Line 2 goes to San Marco in about 30 minutes for 9.50 euros per person. Walking is free and more rewarding.

The Best Walking Route

  1. Cross Piazzale Roma and enter Santa Croce. Follow signs for San Marco.

  2. Pass through San Polo via the Rialto Bridge — the iconic stone arch over the Grand Canal.

  3. Continue to San Marco through narrow streets, over small bridges, and past hidden churches.

  4. Arrive at St. Mark's Square — the Basilica, the Campanile, the Doge's Palace, and the waterfront.

Tips for Walking Venice

Venice has no cars, no bicycles, and no scooters. Wear comfortable shoes — the cobblestones and bridge steps add up. Getting slightly lost is inevitable and part of the charm.

Avoid restaurants with photos on the menu near St. Mark's. Walk 5 minutes in any direction for dramatically better and cheaper food. Lucy translates Italian menus and reads the handwritten specials at authentic bacari (Venetian wine bars).
