General Taxi Safety Rules

  • Use official taxi ranks. At cruise ports, there is usually an official taxi line. Use it. Random taxis that approach you may charge more.

  • Agree on the price before getting in — or insist on the meter. If the driver says the meter is broken, get a different taxi.

  • Have the destination written down. Show the address on your phone screen. Mispronunciation causes wrong destinations.

  • Keep the port address saved. For your return trip, have the cruise terminal name and address in the local language ready to show.

  • Use ride-hailing apps when available. Uber, Bolt, and local equivalents show the price upfront and track your route. Available in Barcelona, Lisbon, Istanbul, and many other ports.

Port-Specific Taxi Tips

Naples: Use the official rank. Insist on the meter. Rome: Fixed rate from Civitavecchia station, not the meter. Istanbul: Insist on the meter. Greece: Agree on the price for island taxis. Caribbean: Agree on the fare before boarding — meters are rare.
