Getting into Lisbon

  • Tram 15E — Scenic waterfront route to the city center. About 15 minutes, 3 euros with a Viva Viagem card.

  • Taxi or Uber — Plentiful and affordable. About 8-10 euros to Praca do Comercio.

  • Walking — Possible along the waterfront (30-40 minutes) but Lisbon's hills make it tiring on return.

A Walking Plan for Lisbon

Start at Praca do Comercio, the grand waterfront square. Walk through the Baixa district. Take the Santa Justa Elevator or walk up to the Alfama — the oldest neighborhood with Moorish streets, fado music, and spectacular viewpoints.

If you have time, take Tram 28 through the narrow streets of Alfama and Graca. Tourist-heavy but genuinely spectacular.

What to Eat

Pasteis de nata (custard tarts) are mandatory — eat them warm. Bacalhau (salt cod) is the national dish with hundreds of preparations. Grilled sardines are a Lisbon specialty. A bifana (pork sandwich) is the perfect budget lunch.

Lucy translates Portuguese menus, explains bacalhau preparations, and helps you navigate Lisbon's food scene.
