Getting to the Grand Bazaar from the Cruise Port
Istanbul's cruise terminal at Karakoy is well-positioned. The Grand Bazaar is about 2km away — a 25-minute walk across the Galata Bridge or take the T1 tram to Beyazit station.
Navigating the Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar has over 4,000 shops in a covered labyrinth of 61 streets. It is the world's oldest shopping mall, dating to 1461. Getting lost is inevitable — relax and enjoy it.
The bazaar is organized roughly by trade: leather goods, jewelry, carpets, ceramics, and spices each have zones.
For spices specifically, visit the nearby Spice Bazaar instead — smaller, more focused, and easier to navigate.
Bargaining Tips
Bargaining is expected. Start at about 40-50% of the asking price and work toward a middle ground. Be friendly, be willing to walk away. Tea will be offered — accepting is polite and does not obligate you to buy.
What to Buy
Turkish ceramics, hand-painted Iznik tiles, leather goods, Turkish delight, spices, and handwoven textiles are the best purchases. Lucy translates Turkish signs and product labels and helps you communicate prices.
