Taboos You Might Not Know About

  • Showing the soles of your feet — In much of Asia and the Middle East, the bottom of your foot is the dirtiest part of the body. Never point your feet at a person or a religious image.

  • Using your left hand — In India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa, the left hand is considered unclean. Eat, hand over money, and shake hands with your right hand only.

  • Touching someone's head — In Thailand and other Buddhist countries, the head is the most sacred part of the body. Never touch anyone's head, even a child's.

  • Refusing food or drink — In many Middle Eastern and Asian cultures, refusing offered food or tea is a serious insult. Accept graciously, even if you only take a small amount.

  • Entering homes with shoes on — In Japan, Korea, Turkey, and many other countries, shoes must come off at the door. Look for a shoe rack or follow the host's lead.

Religious and Sacred Site Rules

Cover your shoulders and knees at religious sites across most of the world. Remove shoes before entering mosques and many temples. Do not photograph people praying without permission. Women may need to cover their hair at mosques and some churches.

The Golden Rule of Travel

When you do not know the rules, observe before acting. Watch what locals do and follow their lead. Lucy provides cultural context with every translation, so you are always informed about the customs of the place you are visiting.
