Getting Around Cheaply

Safari buses (open-air trucks with bench seating) run along main routes for 1-2 USD per ride. They run between the cruise port, Charlotte Amalie, and Red Hook. Flag one down like a taxi.

Free and Cheap Things to Do

  • Magens Bay Beach — One of the world's best beaches. Entry is 5 USD. Safari bus from town costs 2 USD.

  • Charlotte Amalie — Walkable and free. Historic Danish architecture, Fort Christian, and duty-free shopping.

  • 99 Steps — A historic Danish staircase with harbor views.

Eating on a Budget

Skip the waterfront tourist restaurants. Walk into Charlotte Amalie for local food trucks serving roti, johnnycakes, conch fritters, and fresh fish at local prices. Fruit stands near the market sell fresh tropical fruit.

St. Thomas uses the US dollar. Water is safe from the tap. Rum is duty-free and much cheaper than on the ship.
