Why a Beach Day Is Sometimes the Best Day

Not every port day needs to be a cultural marathon. Sometimes the best thing you can do is grab a towel, find a beautiful beach, and relax. Many cruise ports have excellent beaches within walking distance or a short bus ride.

Best Free and Cheap Beaches at Cruise Ports

  • Barceloneta, Barcelona: 15-minute walk from the port. City beach with restaurants and bars. Free.

  • Magens Bay, St. Thomas: World-class beach. 5 USD entry. Safari bus from town costs 2 USD.

  • Banje Beach, Dubrovnik: Just outside the Old Town walls. Views of the city and Lokrum Island. Sunbed rental optional.

  • Playa del Carmen, Cozumel: Free public beaches along the western coast. Calm, clear water.

  • Perissa/Kamari, Santorini: Black sand beaches on the southern coast. Bus from Fira, about 3 EUR.

  • Manly Beach, Sydney: 30-minute ferry from Circular Quay. One of the world's great urban beaches. Ferry costs about 9 AUD.

Beach Day Essentials

Bring a towel from the ship (check if they offer beach towels). Pack sunscreen, water, and a waterproof phone case. Bring small cash for drinks and snacks. Set your return alarm — do not miss the ship for a sunset swim.
