Getting from Piraeus to Athens
Piraeus cruise terminal is about 12km from central Athens. The metro Line 1 runs from Piraeus to Monastiraki station in about 25 minutes for 1.20 euros. Take the metro — it is cheap, reliable, and drops you near the Acropolis.
A Suggested 6-Hour Itinerary
Acropolis (2 hours). Head straight there from Monastiraki. Buy a combined ticket (30 euros) that covers the Acropolis and five other sites. Go early to beat the heat.
Acropolis Museum (45 minutes). Modern museum at the base of the Acropolis hill. The glass floor revealing excavations beneath is remarkable.
Lunch in the Plaka (1 hour). The old neighborhood below the Acropolis. Eat at a place with locals inside, not a menu in six languages.
Monastiraki Flea Market (30 minutes). Browse antiques, souvenirs, and local crafts. Great Acropolis views from the square.
Return to Piraeus (30 minutes). Metro back to the port with time to spare.
Essential Tips
Athens is hot in summer — bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. The Acropolis hill has no shade. Wear shoes with good grip as the marble paths are slippery. Book Acropolis tickets online to skip the queue.
