Getting to the City
Amsterdam's cruise terminal at IJhaven is about 2km from Centraal station. A free shuttle usually runs between them. From Centraal, the entire canal district is within walking distance.
Exploring the Canal District
The three main canals — Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht — form concentric semicircles. Walk along any canal for 17th-century merchants' houses, houseboats, and picture-perfect bridges.
Anne Frank House — Book tickets months in advance. A deeply moving experience.
Jordaan neighborhood — Small shops, cozy cafes, and traditional brown cafes (Dutch pubs).
Rijksmuseum — The Dutch national museum. Building and gardens are worth seeing even from outside.
Vondelpark — Amsterdam's central park. A lovely green space for a break.
What to Eat
Bitterballen (fried meat ragout balls) are the essential bar snack. Stroopwafels fresh from a market stall. Raw herring from a street stand with onions and pickles. Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table) is Amsterdam's multicultural specialty.
Lucy translates Dutch menus and Indonesian food terminology across Amsterdam's diverse food scene.
