Getting There Independently

Mendenhall Glacier is about 20km from the Juneau cruise port. The MGT bus runs about 5 USD each way. A taxi costs 30-40 USD each way. Ship excursions charge 80-150 USD per person for essentially the same experience. Total cost for two going independently: about 30 USD versus 200-300 USD via ship.

What to See

  • The Visitor Center — Exhibits, a glacier film, and huge windows framing the glacier and Mendenhall Lake.

  • Photo Point Trail — Short flat trail to the best viewpoint. 15 minutes round trip.

  • Nugget Falls Trail — 2km trail to a stunning waterfall with the glacier backdrop. The best walk at the site.

  • East Glacier Loop — 5.5km moderate trail through rainforest. For hikers with more time.

Practical Tips

The glacier is retreating rapidly. Bring rain gear, layers, and bear spray for longer trails. Back in downtown Juneau, try fresh salmon or halibut — some of the best seafood in the world.
